22-year-old Utah resident Tyler Robinson has been taken into custody for the assassination of Charlie Kirk
Authorities announced Thursday that the suspect in the killing of Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, saying he came to the attention of law enforcement after reaching out to a family friend, who then alerted authorities. Investigators noted that Robinson had previously spoken negatively of Kirk, according to information provided by a family member.
During the investigation, officers recovered a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel. Casings found alongside the weapon were engraved with inscriptions, including one that read, “Hey fascist! Catch!” officials said. President Donald Trump earlier suggested he believed “with a high degree of certainty” that the shooter had been caught.
Robinson is currently being held at the Utah County Jail in Spanish Fork on preliminary charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Formal charges have not yet been filed, but Governor Cox said prosecutors are preparing charging documents and will be working closely with Kirk’s family as the case moves forward.
