A House Republican, Representative, Andy Ogle, has introduced a proposed change to the Constitution that would allow President Trump to seek a third term in office
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) has introduced a resolution aimed at amending the 22nd Amendment to permit former President Donald Trump to serve a third term in office.
Ogles announced the resolution on Thursday, explaining that if enacted, it would make Trump the first president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt to potentially serve three terms. Roosevelt remains the only U.S. president to have served more than two terms.
The proposed amendment would allow presidents to serve up to three terms, but no more than two consecutively. This structure aligns with Trump’s unique situation, having served nonconsecutive terms after winning elections in 2016 and 2024. If the amendment were approved, Trump could theoretically run for a third term in 2028.
"President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years," Ogles stated. "He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal."
Ogles emphasized that the amendment would be a necessary change to the Constitution to address what he sees as the nation’s urgent need for Trump’s leadership. "This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs," he added.
Amending the Constitution requires the support of two-thirds of both the House and Senate, as well as ratification by three-fourths of the states. The resolution is unlikely to gain the required support in Congress, as it would face opposition from the 215 Democrats in the House and the 47 Democrat-aligned senators.
In his statement, Ogles praised Trump’s handling of key issues such as diversity, equity, and inclusion, immigration, and energy policy. He also endorsed Trump’s broader leadership approach.
"It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration," Ogles said. "President Trump has shown time and time again that his loyalty lies with the American people and our great nation above all else. He is dedicated to restoring the republic and saving our country, and we, as legislators and as states, must do everything in our power to support him."
Trump has previously suggested the possibility of running for a third term. In 2020, during a rally in Nevada, he told supporters, "We’re going to win four more years in the White House. And then after that, we’ll negotiate, right? Because we’re probably, based on the way we were treated, entitled to another four after that."
