Airbnb, $ABNB, will no longer allow hosts to use indoor security cameras,

Airbnb announced that it is prohibiting the use of indoor security cameras in listings worldwide.

Previously, Airbnb allowed hosts to have indoor security cameras in common areas as long as they were clearly disclosed on the listing page and placed in visible spots in the home. However, indoor security cameras were never permitted in areas like sleeping quarters and bathrooms.

The updated policy clarifies that indoor security cameras are now banned in all listings, regardless of their location, purpose, or prior disclosure.

Juniper Downs, Airbnb's head of community policy and partnerships, stated in a company blog post on Monday, “Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb.”

Downs added that the new policy was developed in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts.

The company highlighted that the majority of Airbnb listings currently do not report having a security camera, meaning that the policy update should only affect a small number of hosts.

Hosts who currently have indoor security cameras have until April 30 to remove them. After this date, a host who violates the new policy could face consequences, including listing or account removal from the platform.

Outdoor security cameras, such as doorbell cameras, will continue to be allowed on Airbnb. However, hosts will be required to disclose the presence and general location of any outdoor cameras to guests before they book.
