Airbnb CEO says bosses will vacation in the 'Hamptons' while calling people back to the office

The CEO of Airbnb, Brian Chesky, shares how bosses are vacationing while calling people back to the office. He shared those statements during an episode of the Decoder podcast.

The Decoder podcast, with Nilay Patel, The Verge's editor-in-chief, recently invited Chesky for an interview, and within their discussion, the CEO shared that many other CEOs were vacationing.

Chesky: "I guarantee you that many of these CEOs who are calling people back to the office in New York City are going away to the Hamptons for the summer or going to Europe in August... I still think that's happening. So you still have incremental flexibility. That's way more than the old world before Zoom."

Airbnb is a company that allows its employees to live and work anywhere, which it announced in 2022. The announcement also revealed that employees that decide to do so wouldn't receive pay loss if they decided to stay "in their home countries."

Chesky: "I don't think most people will find that they need 100% of their workforce together 50 weeks a year to do that,"

The Airbnb CEO also notes that his employees were more productive when they were working remotely. The company is from San Francisco, where 30% of office buildings have available leases or sublease spaces, with around 18.4 million square feet of free office space downtown.

In  November, Airbnb decided to show the full price in the search results. This meant including cleaning and other fees within the prices for users to see immediately when they use the platform.

During that time, the CEO entertained the idea of potentially displaying prices after tax.

During this time, the company reported a "disproportionate" 31% increase in single-room listings through their third quarter. This comes as 46% of hosts are trying to look for a way to get extra income to use for food and other items.
