Amazon, $AMZN, is trialling humanoid robots in its US warehouses.
Amazon is conducting trials of humanoid robots in its US warehouses, marking another step in the tech giant's increasing automation efforts. The company stated that the goal is to "free employees up to better deliver for our customers."
The trial involves testing a new robot named Digit, designed with arms and legs capable of moving, grasping, and handling items similarly to a human. While Amazon emphasized the collaborative nature of its robotics systems with human staff, a union expressed concerns, stating that Amazon has been treating its workers like robots for years, leading to job losses.
The company countered by highlighting the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs, including 700 categories of skilled roles facilitated by automation. Amazon Robotics emphasized the irreplaceable role of people in the fulfillment process and dismissed the notion of fully automated warehouses in the future.
The current trial is focused on assessing Digit's ability to work safely alongside human employees.
