Americans Spend Record Share on Hobbies as Savings Rate Slips

Hobby categories are at a record share of US goods consumption, beating pandemic highs, per Bloomberg. But the savings rate just hit a three-year low.

Americans Spend Record Share on Hobbies as Savings Rate Slips

Americans are pouring more of their paychecks into crafts, sporting goods, books, and musical instruments than at any point on record, according to government data compiled by Bloomberg. The splurge is helping prop up consumer spending even as savings shrink.

What the data shows

Hobby categories as a share of overall goods consumption are at the highest on record, beating even the pandemic, according to government figures compiled by Bloomberg.

In the monthly retail sales report, spending at sporting goods, hobby, musical instruments and book stores rose 15% in June from a year earlier, outpacing almost every other category tracked.

Consumers are dipping into savings to fund it

The personal saving rate fell to 2.7% in June, the lowest since June 2022. Personal outlays rose by $70 billion during the month, outpacing a $48.3 billion increase in disposable income.

Translation for traders: discretionary demand is holding up, but the funding source is thinner household buffers, not rising real income.

Why it matters for the market

The retail bid is skewing toward hands-on categories, arts, crafts, sewing, gardening, sporting goods, over traditional apparel and electronics. As Santander chief US economist Stephen Stanley put it, consumers have sustained real spending by cutting their savings rate, and that “obviously isn’t sustainable forever.”

If the savings cushion keeps shrinking, hobby-linked retailers could see a demand air pocket into any labor-market softening. For now, the tape favors the beneficiaries.
