Anthropic Researchers Warn AI Could Kill All Humans This Decade
Three Anthropic researchers, including alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger, publicly warned AI could kill all humans this decade, per Axios. Hubinger puts the odds above 10%.
Three Anthropic researchers have gone public with warnings that out-of-control AI could destroy humanity before the decade is out, according to Axios. The posts landed just weeks before an expected Anthropic IPO and days after OpenAI leadership acknowledged the technology is entering an uncontrollable phase.
What the researchers actually said
Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who resigned Tuesday to sound the alarm, wrote on X that the people building AI earnestly believe it could kill everyone by the end of the decade, calling it not a marketing stunt and saying executives couch their language publicly but express fear privately.
Anthropic alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger backed him up, saying the company really does earnestly believe AI could kill all humans, that he personally puts the odds above 10% within the next decade, and that Anthropic does not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence.
Samuel Marks, Anthropic’s scalable-oversight lead, added that AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction or similarly bad outcomes in the next few years, that more senior employees tend to be more concerned, and that development continues due to commercial incentives and a belief that labs are in a race with each other.
Why the market should care now
Coxon’s resignation post has drawn over 110 million views on X after he accused frontier labs of gambling with our lives. That level of virality tends to pull in regulators and politicians, and regulation is the single biggest overhang for the AI trade.
Hubinger’s post was widely cast as either a communications gaffe or a calculated dose of fear marketing from Anthropic, weeks before an IPO. Either read is a market story: one hits sentiment, the other hits the IPO calendar.

Context: this is not the first warning
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei told Axios last year there is a 25% chance things go really, really badly. Elon Musk has put the risk as high as 20%.
OpenAI’s chief scientist Jakub Pachocki published a blog post on Sunday warning that no AI company has solved alignment and monitoring to a sufficient degree. The concerns are no longer coming from the fringe — they are coming from the labs cashing the checks.
Options market and stocks to watch
Any headline that puts AI regulation back on the table hits the capex and compute stack first. Watch these names:
- NVDA: The purest AI beta. Watch for skew changes and put flow if regulatory chatter picks up in Washington.
- MSFT: Anthropic’s rival OpenAI backer. IPO timing and safety narrative around Anthropic can bleed into Microsoft’s AI positioning.
- GOOGL: A major Anthropic investor. Any hit to Anthropic’s IPO narrative flows back here.
- AMZN: The other large Anthropic backer via AWS. Watch for reaction if the IPO timeline slips.
- META: Heavy AI capex spender. Regulation risk premium tends to compress the entire hyperscaler basket together.
Bottom line
Traders do not need to take a stance on p(doom) to trade this. What matters is that senior insiders at a top-3 lab are publicly saying alignment is unsolved, right before an IPO, right as OpenAI’s own chief scientist says the same thing. That combination usually pulls forward regulatory risk pricing across the AI complex.
