Anthropic Asks Job Candidates: How Would You Feel If Stock Went to Zero?

Anthropic is putting a blunt money-versus-mission question in front of job candidates, and the answer could matter as the company marches toward one of the largest IPOs ever floated in tech.

Anthropic candidates are reportedly being asked during a culture interview how they would feel if the company someday walked away from its AI ambitions on safety grounds, sending the stock to zero along the way.

What Anthropic is asking

Anthropic candidates all go through a culture interview conducted by an employee nominated for the task, and one applicant recalled being asked how they would feel if the company someday abandoned its AI ambitions for safety reasons, and that decision sent the stock to zero.

A former Anthropic employee familiar with the process said the questions are suggested but not fully scripted, which could explain why some applicants remember the question relating to an actual stock crash while others said it was generally related to safety trade-offs that could impact revenue.

The stock-related question may be relatively new. Two former Anthropic employees said it was not previously part of the interview process, while posts on Blind indicate candidates received the question in 2025.

Why the question exists now

Anthropic is targeting a roughly $2 trillion IPO that could set records and even eclipse SpaceX, with a windfall expected for the AI company’s more than 2,500 employees.

CEO Dario Amodei, with an estimated net worth of $15.5 billion, has reportedly expressed concerns about the way the company’s enormous financial incentives could affect its ability to retain employees who are genuinely committed to its mission. In other words, leadership is trying to screen for people who will not flinch if safety calls override upside.

How candidates are answering

“I was honest and said no, I would not be happy if the stock went to 0,” one candidate, who discussed the interview process on the anonymous workplace site Blind, said. The interviewer, the writer said, appeared unhappy with the answer.

Anthropic has a standard process for interviews and compensation. What you’re offered is what you get. Negotiations are not part of the process.

Has safety actually hurt revenue?

The company previously refused to provide the US military with unrestricted access to its technology, costing it government contracts, and restricted access to Mythos because of safety concerns.

It is not clear that these choices were net negative for revenue, and that is difficult to confirm as Anthropic is not a public company yet. After the Department of War scuffle, Anthropic’s Claude app hit No. 1 on U.S. app store charts.

Options market and stocks to watch

Anthropic is still private, but the read-through hits every major AI-exposed name on the tape:

MSFT: Microsoft’s OpenAI stake and Azure AI revenue make it the cleanest public proxy for how investors price frontier-AI risk. Watch for flow reactions if IPO chatter around Anthropic heats up.

GOOGL: Alphabet is one of Anthropic’s largest backers. Any pre-IPO markup or valuation update flows straight through to Google’s balance sheet.

AMZN: Amazon has committed billions to Anthropic and is the primary cloud partner. Watch AWS commentary for signs of demand tied to Claude.

NVDA: A trillion-dollar Anthropic print would reinforce the AI capex cycle Nvidia sits at the center of. Watch call skew on any IPO headline.
