A $750 billion year

Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Google are expected to pour $750 billion into capital spending this year, mostly on AI data centers, per Bloomberg.

That is enough to write a $5,500 check to every household in America. It is up more than 80% from last year's $410 billion, and it is more than the entire gross domestic product of Ireland or Belgium, and more than half of what all the companies in the S&P 500 spent in total last year.

Meta, Amazon, Microsoft and Google are expected to devote roughly $750 billion to capital expenditures this year alone, mostly to build AI data centers, per Bloomberg.

What a single data center costs

Bloomberg's breakdown of a hypothetical 1-gigawatt data center in Abilene, Texas put the price of developing and equipping one site at roughly $30 billion. Server racks and other computing hardware account for about half of a project's total cost, with electricity generation, cooling systems, fiber networks, construction and engineering adding billions more.

The spending is bidding up everything in the chain. Steel, copper and memory chips have become more expensive, power equipment suppliers face backlogs extending beyond 2030, and land with existing electricity connections has surged in value. Power availability remains a major obstacle, pushing developers toward on-site gas-fired generation, while liquid cooling is becoming standard because AI chips generate substantial heat.

The buildout is channeling billions into debt and equity markets and creating work across energy, construction, real estate and equipment manufacturing. It also raises the bubble question: the scale of investment is running far ahead of the profits of some leading AI developers, which have yet to turn a profit.

Options market and stocks to watch

The spenders are the story and the suppliers are the trade. META, AMZN, MSFT and GOOGL carry the capex on their own cash-flow statements, and every earnings call now gets judged on whether the spending converts into AI revenue.

Down the chain, NVDA and AVGO take the hardware share, while power and cooling names price the physical bottleneck. Watch quarterly capex guidance revisions for the real signal, and follow the AI buildout on the Unusual Whales news feed.
