Bill Gates expects AI chatbots to teach kids reading in the span of just 18 months

Per CNBC

Bill Gates believes it will only take a year and a half before AI chatbots can teach kids how to read. To be specific, the Microsoft founder believes it will only take 18 months, and the world will be "stunned" by how it would help kids.

Gates gave a statement at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego during his keynote talk, sharing that the ability of AI would be as good as a tutor. He even noted that its ability as a tutor could be on par with humans.

Gates: “The AI’s will get to that ability, to be as good a tutor as any human ever could,”

Gates said that when it came to reading and writing, chatbots were already fluent, which would allow them to teach students to improve their own reading and writing practices. Chatbots would reportedly top other previous ways children were trained using technology.

Gates: “At first, we’ll be most stunned by how it helps with reading — being a reading research assistant — and giving you feedback on writing,”

The Microsoft founder also said that in 18 months, AIs would assist teachers and help them by providing writing feedback. The billionaire also said that it would increase general math capabilities.

Gates: “If you just took the next 18 months, the AIs will come in as a teacher’s aide and give feedback on writing... And then they will amp up what we’re able to do in math.”

Recently, voice actors were among the groups of individuals that have expressed their fears regarding AI taking over their jobs. They shared how they were "shocked" to find how AI could replicate their speech and tone.

Google employees themselves have feared how the company was cutting corners in order to compete with ChatGPT. One employee concluded that the company's Bard AI was a "pathological liar."
