Bill Gates says Elon Musk's and researcher's call to pause AI development won't 'solve the challenges'

Per Reuters

Previously, Elon Musk and other researchers have called for a pause on AI development for technologies like GPT-4 and more advanced. Now, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has commented on the requests saying pausing development isn't the solution.

Gates: “I don’t think asking one particular group to pause solves the challenges... Clearly there’s huge benefits to these things… what we need to do is identify the tricky areas.”

The Microsoft co-founder then said that instead of pausing AI development, it would be better to focus on the use cases of AI development. Gates' response was directed to an open letter from Elon Musk and over a thousand AI experts.

The open letter demanded a pause on development for technologies like GPT-4 and those potentially more powerful for a period of six months. Aside from Musk, another prominent tech figure, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, shared the societal risks and benefits that still needed assessment.

Gates has long been a strong supporter of AI, even writing a blog titled "The Age of AI has begun," published on March 21. He gave a statement in an interview regarding how there were different opinions regarding artificial intelligence.

Gates: “I don’t really understand who they’re saying could stop, and would every country in the world agree to stop, and why to stop... But there are a lot of different opinions in this area.”

The Microsoft co-founder has long been focusing on his campaigns on climate change. Recently, he was asked whether he would continue using private jets while continuing his campaign, and to this, he confirmed that he would.

More recently, Gates warned that it would be a "huge mistake" if new TB vaccines weren't funded. He estimated the vaccine trial would cost $700 to $800 million, and if not funded, the trials could be pushed by over a century.
