Cancer Rates Are Rising Among Adults Under 50, With Prostate, Kidney, Womb, Liver, Pancreas and Breast Cancers All Increasing

A 'concerning' trajectory in younger adults

There have been increases in rates of prostate, kidney, womb, liver, pancreas and breast cancers among adults aged under 50, per Sky News. The findings come from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF), which analysed NHS data in England comparing diagnosis rates in 2001 and 2023. The charity said that while most cancers are still diagnosed in older adults, the trajectory is "concerning" and should make people "pause and think."

The numbers behind the rise

Some of the increases are steep in percentage terms, albeit from low bases. Prostate cancer diagnoses among men under 50 rose from the equivalent of 1 case per 100,000 men in 2001 to 3.6 per 100,000 in 2023. Kidney cancer doubled from 1.5 to 3 per 100,000 adults under 50, womb cancer rose from 1.8 to 3.9 per 100,000 women, and bowel cancer, not on the original list but among the largest movers, more than doubled from 3.9 to 8.4 per 100,000. Breast cancer rose from 42 to 47.5 per 100,000 women, liver cancer from 0.5 to 0.8 per 100,000, and pancreatic cancer from 0.8 to 1 per 100,000.

The pattern is not only English. The wider WCRF analysis found seven cancer types rising in England among under-50s, five in the United States and four in the Netherlands; in the US, kidney cancer in under-50s more than doubled from 2.5 per 100,000 in 2000 to 5.3 in 2023, while lung cancer in under-50s fell in all three countries as smoking declined. Dr Giota Mitrou, WCRF's executive director of research and policy, said the figures show the early-onset picture is "far wider and more complex" than bowel cancer alone. The charity said the biological mechanisms are not fully understood, pointed to lifestyle factors such as obesity, diet, inactivity and alcohol among the suspected drivers, and called for early-onset cancer to be treated as a serious research and prevention priority.

Options market and stocks to watch

Rising early-onset incidence is a long-run demand story for diagnostics and screening, which puts liquid-biopsy and early-detection names in focus alongside the broader healthcare complex in XLV, and screening guideline debates are the catalyst that can move testing volumes. Insurers in the managed-care space wear the other side of the same math if treatment ages keep falling.
