Congressman Al Green is bringing articles of impeachment against Donald Trump

Representative Al Green (D-Texas) filed an article of impeachment on Tuesday against President Donald Trump, accusing him of failing to notify or seek authorization from Congress before the U.S. launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

In the resolution, Green charges the president with “abuse of presidential powers by disregarding the separation of powers—devolving American democracy into authoritarianism by unconstitutionally usurping Congress’s power to declare war.”

“President Trump’s unilateral, unprovoked use of force without congressional authorization or notice constitutes an abuse of power,” the resolution states, “when there was no imminent threat to the United States, which facilitates the devolution of American democracy into authoritarianism.”

The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the sole authority to “declare war” under Article I. Still, presidents from both parties have launched military action without explicit congressional approval in the past.

Green’s resolution calls Trump “an authoritarian president” and “a threat to American democracy.” It also cites Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol attack, his immigration agenda, and his attacks on federal judges as part of a broader pattern of abuse of power.

Despite the recent U.S. strikes near Tehran, Trump has repeatedly asserted that his administration is not seeking a prolonged war. He has urged both sides to pursue peace and called on Iran to return to negotiations.

On Monday, the president announced that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between the warring parties, bringing a halt—at least temporarily—to the 12-day conflict.

Still, tensions remained high as Israel accused Iran of violating the truce, promising retaliation. On Tuesday, Trump said that the Israeli military had agreed not to strike Tehran, and that the ceasefire remains intact.

The president’s actions have sparked division across party lines. While many Republicans and some Democrats praised the strikes as decisive, others, including a growing number of Democrats, have expressed concern over the lack of congressional authorization—with a few, like Green, calling it grounds for impeachment.

Green has long been one of Trump’s most vocal opponents on Capitol Hill. He has introduced multiple impeachment resolutions against the former president, including one just last month. Earlier this year, he was censured after heckling Trump during a joint session of Congress.

“I did not come to Congress to be a bystander while a president abuses power and devolves American democracy into authoritarianism with himself as an authoritarian president,” Green said in a statement on Tuesday.
“President Trump’s unauthorized bombing of Iran constitutes a de facto declaration of war. No president has the right to drag this nation into war without the authorization of the people’s representatives.”
