Congresswoman AOC says Trump should be impeached due to his strikes on Iran
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said Saturday night that President Trump’s decision to strike three Iranian nuclear sites constitutes grounds for impeachment, becoming one of the first elected Democrats to call for constitutional consequences following the attack.
Trump announced on Sunday night that the U.S. had carried out a “spectacular military success” against Iran, targeting three nuclear facilities—most notably Fordow, hidden deep within a mountain south of Tehran. He warned that additional strikes would follow if Iran did not come to the negotiating table.
Many House Democrats labeled Trump’s action unconstitutional, but Ocasio-Cortez went further, framing the strike as explicitly impeachable. In a post on X, she wrote: “The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment.”
The Constitution grants Congress the sole power to declare war under Article I, yet past presidents from both parties have launched military actions without explicit Congressional approval.
Ocasio-Cortez argued that by bombing the Iranian nuclear facilities sans Capitol Hill authorization, Trump violated the Constitution and Congressional War Powers.
Her comments echo ongoing debates in Washington over U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, which intensified after Israel struck nuclear sites in what it called a preemptive move, triggering reciprocal attacks in the region.
It remains uncertain whether Democrats will pursue impeachment following the strikes. With the GOP holding the majority in both the House and Senate, any effort would likely be stymied.
Nonetheless, at least two House Republicans also criticized Trump’s move. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), an outspoken opponent of U.S. intervention in the Israel-Iran conflict, wrote on X, “This is not Constitutional.” Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) echoed the sentiment, writing, “While President Trump’s decision may prove just, it's hard to conceive a rationale that’s Constitutional. I look forward to his remarks tonight.”
