DeepMind Dismantles Nobel-Winning AlphaFold Team, Pivots to Gemini
Google DeepMind has disbanded its Nobel Prize-winning AlphaFold team, reassigning researchers to Gemini and losing three core scientists, including laureate John Jumper, to Anthropic.
Google DeepMind has broken up the team behind AlphaFold, the Nobel Prize-winning protein-structure AI, and is redirecting talent toward its Gemini large language model race. The move signals a strategic reset at GOOGL’s flagship AI lab, and a talent bleed to rival Anthropic.
What happened
Most of the original authors of the AlphaFold papers have been reassigned in the last year, with the company confirming that employees have moved to projects dealing with Google’s Gemini large language model, plus areas like enzyme design, nuclear fusion and genomics.
Others have moved to Google’s Isomorphic Labs, and almost a quarter of the full-time Google DeepMind authors of the original AlphaFold papers have simply left the company.
The talent bleed to Anthropic
Nobel laureate John Jumper, who served as vice president and engineering fellow at DeepMind, departed for Anthropic in June 2026, and two other core AlphaFold co-authors, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, followed him.
Anthropic recently launched Claude Science, a workbench designed for biology and drug-discovery applications, the same domain AlphaFold pioneered, and the hires give Anthropic deep domain expertise in applying AI to life sciences.

Why the pivot
The restructuring marks DeepMind’s formal farewell to a strategic era centered on solving singular, grand scientific challenges and a full pivot toward building general artificial intelligence and agents around its Gemini large language model.
DeepMind is simultaneously competing with OpenAI and Anthropic on frontier AI agents, and it has been running behind its own shipping schedule on its flagship model. The reallocation of research firepower toward Gemini reads as an admission that the LLM race is now the priority.
The read for investors
The generous read: AlphaFold solved its problem, spawned Isomorphic Labs, and the team was freed for the next frontier. The harder read: the lab most defined by deep science is reorganising around the same language-model race as everyone else, and it is losing the talent that made its name to the rivals driving that race.
For Alphabet shareholders, the question is whether Gemini can close the gap fast enough to justify the cultural shift. See more coverage in other news.
Options market and stocks to watch
GOOGL: Watch for reaction to any perceived erosion of DeepMind’s scientific moat and the Gemini shipping cadence.
MSFT: Watch as OpenAI’s primary backer benefits from any perception that DeepMind is falling behind in the agent race.
NVDA: Watch for compute demand read-throughs as hyperscalers double down on frontier LLM and agent workloads.
META: Watch for talent-war ripple effects as elite AI researchers become the scarcest resource in the sector.
