Democratic Representative Al Green has announces Articles of Impeachment against Trump
A Democratic representative announced in the U.S. House on Wednesday that he is introducing articles of impeachment against Donald Trump over the former president’s proposal to “take over Gaza.”
Trump’s plan, according to Texas Representative Al Green, is a “desperate act” that amounts to ethnic cleansing.
The bold move comes as Democrats ramp up their opposition to the chaotic and authoritarian policies of Trump’s fledgling second administration—policies some describe as a coup attempt.
During a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump declared that the U.S. would “take over” Gaza and turn it into what he called a U.S.-controlled “Riviera of the Middle East,” sparking global outrage. Critics labeled the proposal “outrageous,” “shameful,” and “illegal.”
Green, a well-known progressive who made multiple unsuccessful attempts to impeach Trump during his first term, is unlikely to gain widespread support this time. House Democratic leader Pete Aguilar told Politico on Wednesday that impeachment was not a current priority for the caucus.
However, Green’s announcement reflects a growing willingness among elected Democrats to push back against the extremes of Trump’s 16-day-old second presidency. On Tuesday, the liberal advocacy group Call to Activism shared a video of Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin on X, hinting at his openness to impeachment proceedings.
“If you can find me two Republicans, I’ll get to work tomorrow,” Raskin said, referencing the GOP’s slim House majority.
In his speech, Green evoked the words of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., condemning Trump’s plan to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza.
“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke—especially when it’s proposed by the president of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” Green said. “And the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing his people’s history, for standing by and allowing such remarks.”
“Dr. King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America. I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I will introduce articles of impeachment for these desperate deeds proposed—and desperate deeds done.”
Green described the impeachment effort as a “grassroots movement” rather than a “top-down” initiative, adding: “When the people demand it, it will be done.”
