Donald Trump has said taxpayer dollars shouldn't be wasted to arrest people for small amounts of marijuana
On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his support for decriminalizing marijuana, arguing that taxpayer funds should not be spent on arresting individuals carrying "personal amounts."
"In Florida, as in many other states that have already approved it, personal amounts of marijuana will be legalized for adults under Amendment 3," Trump said, referring to the initiative in his home state to legalize the possession and purchase of up to 3 ounces for adults over 21. "Whether people agree with it or not, this will be decided by voters, so it should be handled properly."
Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, suggested that state lawmakers should implement laws to prohibit marijuana use in public spaces. He also stated that it is unjust for marijuana use to be criminalized in some states while being legal in others.
"We shouldn't be ruining lives or wasting taxpayer money arresting adults with personal amounts of marijuana, and no one should have to mourn a loved one because of fentanyl-laced marijuana," Trump added.
Marijuana is now legal in some form in nearly 40 states.
