Donald Trump said he’d end tax exemptions for universities deemed to be left-leaning if voters return him to the White House, per Bloomberg.
During a campaign rally in Durham, New Hampshire, Trump pledged to eliminate tax benefits for universities engaging in discrimination against conservatives, Christians, and Jews, as well as those suppressing free speech.
In his speech on Saturday, Trump asserted that these universities, including Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Pennsylvania, would be required to pay substantial sums for what he deemed as the havoc they have unleashed on the nation.
While criticism of America's academic elite has been a longstanding talking point among Republicans, Trump capitalized on recent congressional testimony by the presidents of Harvard, Penn, and MIT in the aftermath of campus conflicts.
Trump, viewed as the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination based on polls, had previously advocated for reshaping the accreditation process for universities in a July video, aiming to reclaim educational institutions from what he referred to as "the radical left."
New Hampshire is set to hold its primary on Jan. 23, just eight days after the Iowa caucuses.
