Donald Trump will ring the New York Stock Exchange’s opening bell on Thursday

Donald Trump, who built his image as a successful New York businessman into a celebrity brand, reality television stardom, and eventually the presidency, will soon embrace two prominent symbols of recognition. On Thursday, he is set to ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and be named Time magazine's 2024 Person of the Year.

Trump plans to visit Wall Street to perform the ceremonial start to the trading day, according to four sources familiar with the matter. Additionally, Time will announce Trump as its Person of the Year for 2024 on the same day, according to an individual familiar with the selection process. These sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly, shared the information with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The events represent dual acknowledgments for Trump, a lifelong New Yorker who has often tied the stock market's performance to public sentiment and relished high-profile markers of his success in business and media. Trump, a long-time admirer of Time covers, was previously named the magazine’s Person of the Year in 2016, following his first presidential victory.

This year, Trump had been listed as a finalist for the award alongside figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Elon Musk (owner of X), Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Kate, Princess of Wales.

A spokesperson for Time declined to confirm the selection ahead of the formal announcement, stating on Wednesday, "Time does not comment on its annual choice for Person of the Year prior to publication."

Ringing the NYSE opening bell, an iconic representation of U.S. capitalism, will mark a milestone for Trump, who has not previously participated in the tradition despite his decades in New York’s business scene. The event will also provide a prominent photo opportunity in the heart of the financial world.

It remains unclear whether Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat who has recently warmed to Trump and has not ruled out switching parties. Adams is currently facing federal corruption charges related to allegations of selling influence to foreign nationals, claims he denies.

Trump, once emblematic of New York’s ethos, moved his permanent residence from Manhattan’s Trump Tower to Florida following his presidency.

CNN was the first to report on Trump’s upcoming NYSE visit, while Politico initially revealed his expected recognition as Time’s Person of the Year.
