Eli Lilly Halts Twitter Advertising After Fake Account with Checkmark Announced Free Insulin, Causing Stock to Drop 4.5%

Eli Lilly said it will stop all Twitter ad campaigns after a fake account, "Eli Lilly and Company," with the company logo and verification mark, said, "we are excited to announce insulin is free now."

About two and a half hours later, the official Eli Lilly account tweeted, apologizing for the misleading message from the fake Lilly account. The tweet from the fake account remained online for several hours, gaining thousands of likes and hundreds of retweets.

Former Eli Lilly communications officer Amy O'Connor said, "for $8, they're potentially losing millions of dollars in advertising revenue."
