A recent survey indicates that 48% of U.S. employers have ceased pre-employment marijuana screening, reflecting evolving attitudes and legal landscapes. Survey Findings
The survey, conducted by Fisher Phillips, gathered responses from nearly 1,000 employers nationwide. It revealed that 48% no longer test for cannabis during the hiring process. Additionally, 44% of organizations that continue testing report challenges in recruiting qualified candidates.
Employers on the East and West Coasts are less likely to mandate pre-hire cannabis testing. For instance, 66% of employers in New England and 62% in the Pacific region have dropped such tests. In contrast, only 25% of employers in the South Central region have done the same.

Impact on Talent Acquisition
Employers cite talent acquisition and retention as key reasons for eliminating cannabis testing. The tight labor market has made it challenging to find qualified applicants, prompting companies to reconsider their screening policies. Legal Considerations
The shift aligns with changing legal landscapes, as recreational marijuana use is now legal in about half of U.S. states. Employers are adapting to these changes to remain compliant and competitive.
