Over 70 EU lawmakers demand probe into FIFA chief Infantino over Trump call

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is under political fire in Brussels. More than 70 European lawmakers have called for a formal investigation into his conduct, centered on FIFA’s decision to overturn a red card suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun after a call with President Donald Trump.

What triggered the backlash

Balogun was shown a red card during the U.S. victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina on July 1, which normally would make him ineligible to play in the team’s next game, but FIFA lifted his suspension for a match on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump intervened with Infantino on behalf of the 25-year-old striker.

A group of members of the European parliament launched an initiative calling for an investigation into Infantino’s role in the decision. A letter being shared in the European parliament urged football associations across the European Union to seek a formal FIFA review of the decision-making process and any possible political interference.

Lawmakers cite FIFA’s own neutrality rules

The lawmakers argued that the requirement of political neutrality is clearly outlined in both the FIFA Statutes and the Code of Ethics, pointing to Article 4(2) of the FIFA Statutes and Article 15 of the FIFA Code of Ethics, which requires all football officials to remain politically neutral and provides for strong sanctions for violations.

European Parliament lawmakers Barry Andrews, Lara Wolters and Niels Fuglsang said in a joint statement that FIFA’s decision to change the rule on red card suspensions mid-tournament is “a disgrace and a perversion of justice.”

IOC complaint also incoming

Infantino could also face a probe by the International Olympic Committee, after a human rights group said Wednesday it would file a complaint. The IOC cites neutrality among the fundamental principles of Olympism for sports bodies like FIFA, and has jurisdiction over Infantino since he joined its exclusive group of 100-plus invited members in 2020.

FairSquare, a London-based sports and human rights NGO, said it will file a complaint to the IOC regarding Infantino’s repeated breach of political neutrality rules.

Infantino’s defense

Infantino defended his call with Trump, saying he told the US president that the matter was handled by FIFA’s independent judicial bodies. He said that during the conversation with President Trump he explained there was an ongoing legal process involving FIFA’s independent judicial bodies and that the case would be decided in due course by the competent bodies, adding that this is a principle he will always uphold.

UEFA weighs in

European football’s governing body has also waded into the debate, issuing a scathing critique of the precedent set by the USMNT reprieve, and while Belgium ultimately defeated the USA 4-1 on the pitch, UEFA believes the damage to the tournament’s integrity is already done.
