FDA Recalls Grand Central Bakery Bread at Whole Foods, Fred Meyer Over Metal
The FDA has recalled Grand Central Bakery Potato Sourdough bread sold at Whole Foods, Fred Meyer, QFC, PCC and other Seattle-area grocers after a pallet nail was found in a loaf.
The FDA has posted a recall on Grand Central Bakery Potato Sourdough loaves sold across the Seattle and Tacoma metro after a pallet nail turned up inside a loaf. Retailers named in the notice include Whole Foods, Fred Meyer, QFC, PCC Markets, and several other Washington-area chains.
What the FDA said
Grand Central Bakery of Seattle is recalling loaves of Potato Sourdough bread due to the potential presence of pieces of metal, with the affected products sold at grocery stores, select restaurants, wholesalers, and four Grand Central Bakery cafés in the Seattle and Tacoma metro areas on 8/10/2026.
According to the FDA, the recall was initiated on August 13 after a pallet nail was found in a loaf of Potato Sourdough Bread, and the agency confirmed no injuries or illnesses were reported, noting the incident was related to a single batch of dough.
Which retailers are affected
Impacted grocers include Central Co-op, Fred Meyer, Hilltop Red Apple, Ken’s Markets, Marketime Foods, PCC Markets, QFC, Town & Country Market, Thriftway, Whole Foods Markets, Yakima Fruit Markets, and Metropolitan Markets.
The recall covers 20-ounce Potato Market Loaves, 20-ounce Potato Table Loaves, and 12-ounce Mini Potato Loaves.

Why it matters for traders
Food-safety recalls at major grocers rarely move mega-cap tickers on their own, but they add to a broader thread of supply-chain and quality-control headlines already pressuring the sector. The scope here is regional, and because much of this bread was sold unpackaged or in a plain paper bag with no lot code, the identifying detail is the purchase date, and anyone who bought a loaf on August 10 is being told to throw it out rather than inspect it.
Some retailers, including PCC Community Markets, have posted their own notices and are offering refunds, with refunds available through the bakery’s website and through the retailer where the bread was purchased.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch for any read-through in grocery and food-safety-adjacent names:
- KR — Kroger owns Fred Meyer and QFC, both named in the recall. Watch for any incremental headline risk if scope expands.
- AMZN — Amazon owns Whole Foods Markets, which is on the retailer list. Watch for flow tied to grocery-segment sentiment.
- WMT — Not named here, but grocery peers often trade in sympathy on food-safety cycles.
- ACI — Albertsons is another West Coast grocery operator to keep on the radar for regional read-through.
