Gen Z Says It Takes $587,797 a Year to Be Successful. Boomers Say $99,874, per Empower
A sixfold gap in what success pays
Ask each generation what salary counts as success and the answers barely look like the same economy. In Empower's "Secret to Success" survey, Gen Z said financial success means earning $587,797 a year.
Boomers put the number at $99,874. That makes the Gen Z bar nearly six times the boomer bar.
Across all Americans surveyed, the average answer was $270,000 a year in salary and $5.3 million in net worth, and 52 percent said there is a secret to financial success. The survey, fielded by Morning Consult for Empower, covered 2,203 US adults.
The ladder between the generations
Gen X landed between the two at $212,321 a year, with an ideal net worth of about $5.3 million. Boomers paired their lower salary bar with a net worth target of about $1.05 million, while Gen Z paired its $587,797 salary with a $9.47 million net worth.
For scale, the average full-time worker earns roughly $60,580 a year, per Bureau of Labor Statistics figures. The Gen Z success salary is nearly ten times that, a level of pay under 1 percent of Americans reach.
What is holding people back
Respondents blamed the basics. Overspending and weak budgeting topped the list of barriers at 37 percent, followed by debt at 36 percent, the economy at 35 percent and a lack of savings at 35 percent. Income instability was cited by 30 percent, and 28 percent said not setting clear financial goals gets in the way.
The gap in the headline is partly about when each generation formed its expectations. Boomers built their benchmark in an economy of cheaper housing and steadier prices. Gen Z has come of age watching six-figure lifestyles on social media while paying today's prices for rent, food and energy.

Options market and stocks to watch
Generational money habits show up in the brokerage stocks first. HOOD built its business on younger, mobile-first investors, and COIN draws from the same cohort that sets its success bar near $600,000 a year.
SCHW is the incumbent side of the same shift, as trillions in boomer wealth begins moving toward younger heirs. Watch flow in the brokerage names around earnings for growth in funded accounts and net new assets, and follow consumer and fintech names on the Unusual Whales news feed.
