Gen Z Men Are Dropping Out of the US Job Market: NYP
Male Gen Zers are dropping out of the US labor force at accelerating rates, with AI displacement hitting entry-level tech and finance roles hardest, per NYP.
Young American men are quietly walking away from the labor force, and AI is a big part of the story. The New York Post is reporting that male Gen Zers are exiting the US job market at an accelerating pace, with entry-level roles in tech and finance shrinking under automation pressure.
What the data shows
July statistics showed that the labor force shrank by more than a quarter million people versus a year earlier, hitting its lowest levels since the pandemic.
Currently 9.1% of men ages 20 to 24 are unemployed compared to just 7.2% of women, a gap that has persisted since the thick of the pandemic. The male-female gap has been persistent, not a one-quarter blip.
Why it is happening
Ben Smith of the American Institute for Boys and Men warned that men and the occupations they tend to be in are more susceptible to being displaced by AI.
As more women funnel into AI-proof industries like health care, men are still on the hunt for jobs in tech and financial services slowly being overtaken by automation. Gen Z is stepping out of college and into a fierce labor market, up against slower payroll gains, ghost jobs, absent hiring managers, and dwindling entry-level job openings thanks to AI.

The macro read
A shrinking labor force is not just a social story, it is a growth story. Fewer prime-age men working means softer consumption, weaker household formation, and pressure on housing demand over time.
It also gives the Fed a messier read on the unemployment rate, since people who stop looking for work do not show up as unemployed. Watch for continued participation-rate weakness in upcoming NFP prints.
Options market and stocks to watch
Watch for names most exposed to entry-level AI displacement and shifting Gen Z spending patterns:
- MSFT: Copilot rollout is a direct proxy for white-collar automation across finance and tech desks.
- NVDA: Every incremental dollar spent replacing entry-level labor with models flows through here first.
- CRM: Agentforce and enterprise AI agents are pitched explicitly as headcount replacements.
- DKNG: A checked-out young male cohort has historically leaned into online gambling and prediction markets.
- UNH: Health care remains one of the harder sectors to automate, which is where Gen Z women are increasingly funneling.
