Google, $GOOGL, CEO Sundar Pichai warns staff that cuts would continue throughout the year

Since January 10th, Google has implemented workforce reductions affecting over a thousand employees across various departments. In an internal memo shared with all Google employees on Wednesday, CEO Sundar Pichai conveyed the message that more cuts should be anticipated as the company strives to pursue ambitious goals and invest in key priorities throughout the year.

Pichai acknowledged the challenging nature of these decisions, which have already led to layoffs and reorganizations in several teams, including hardware, ad sales, search, shopping, maps, policy, core engineering, and YouTube. Although he clarified that these role eliminations are not on the same scale as last year's reductions, which involved cutting 12,000 jobs, he recognized the emotional impact on affected colleagues and teams.

In his memo, Pichai explained that this year's layoffs are part of a strategic effort to "remove layers to simplify execution and drive velocity in some areas." While many of the changes have already been announced, Pichai candidly admitted that more "role eliminations" are on the horizon. He emphasized that specific resource allocation decisions will continue to be made throughout the year, potentially impacting certain roles as the company navigates its evolving priorities and goals.
