Google kills AR smart glasses project called Iris

The Verge

Google is taking a step back in the augmented reality space as it has decided to kill off project Iris, the name for the project that was responsible for building its supposed augmented reality glasses. This comes as the company wants to shift its focus from hardware to software.

The decision by Google comes at a time when both Meta and Apple have already announced their headgear and are still pushing forward in the AR front. The news that the company would be killing project Iris came from three people "familiar with the matter."

Originally reported by Business Insider, it was noted that a ski goggle-like headset could still happen, just maybe not created by Google itself. As reported by The Verge, a vague announcement was given by Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm in February regarding a partnership for a "new mixed reality platform.

In April, it was reported that only 4% of VR American teen owners use the device on a daily basis, with most of them saying it doesn't excite them. This came from a Piper Sandler survey that found only 29% of its participants owned a VR device.

In January, it was also reported that Apple spent seven years developing its mixed-reality headset.
