Google Maps Renames Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ for U.S. Users

Google Maps has swapped “Lake Ontario” for “Lake America” for U.S. users to reflect President Donald Trump’s executive order renaming the lake. The change lands squarely in the middle of an escalating trade fight between Washington and Ottawa, and it’s the second time in two years Alphabet has adjusted a major North American body of water in Maps to match a Trump order.

What Google actually changed

Google said the change began rolling out Saturday after the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) formally updated the lake’s name from Lake Ontario to Lake America.

“People using Maps in the U.S. will see ‘Lake America,’ those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario,’ and those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names,” Google said in a brief statement. “These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country, and are starting to roll out now.”

Apple Maps, which abided by Trump’s name change for the Gulf of Mexico, still shows the lake as Lake Ontario for users in the US as of Sunday.

Why now: the Canada trade fight

Trump announced on Thursday that he was changing the name of the smallest of the five Great Lakes, part of an escalating trade feud with Canada that has prompted the two countries to impose reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods.

U.S. tariffs of 50% on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect Aug. 22 after trade talks collapsed. Canada retaliated with tariffs on roughly $20 billion in U.S. imports that are set to take effect Sept. 8, according to Reuters.

Canada isn’t playing along

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately rejected the lake’s name change on Thursday. On Saturday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to Trump’s order with a billboard-sized message on the Canadian shore: “Lake Ontario. Now and forever.”

Some Canadian websites, including for the federal government, displayed maps with Lake Ontario renamed as Lake America on Sunday, a day after Google Maps announced the change to align with an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump. That’s a reminder of how much Canadian digital infrastructure runs on U.S.-owned mapping stacks.

The Gulf of America precedent

Google Maps made a similar change to the Gulf of Mexico last year, labeling it the “Gulf of America” following Trump’s executive order on his first day in office renaming the body of water. That move drew a lawsuit from Mexico, so legal risk around geographic naming is not hypothetical for GOOGL.

The headline is political, but there are a few names traders may want on the radar as this feeds into the broader U.S.–Canada tariff story:
