Google, $GOOGL, Announces Quantum Breakthrough as Willow Chip Produces "Magic States" at a Record 99.99% Accuracy, per Science
A 20-year bottleneck cracks
Google has announced a major quantum computing breakthrough, and it targets one of the field's oldest bottlenecks.
In work published in Science, Google's Quantum AI team demonstrated a technique called magic state cultivation on the company's 105-qubit Willow processor. The protocol produced so-called T-states at a record logical fidelity of 99.99 percent, with a 40-fold reduction in errors compared to uncultivated states.
Magic states are a key ingredient quantum computers need to run any calculation reliably. They enable the non-Clifford operations that take a quantum machine beyond a narrow set of tricks and toward universal, fault-tolerant computing.
Why magic states eat quantum computers
The problem has never been knowing that magic states matter. The problem is the cost of making them.
The standard recipe, called distillation, creates a few high-quality states from many imperfect ones. Researchers have been trying to drive that cost down since 2004, and by some estimates up to 95 percent of a quantum computer's capacity could end up devoted to producing magic states, leaving little room for actual calculations. Each state can also be used only once, so a working machine has to manufacture them continuously.
Cultivation works differently. A rough magic state is encoded in a small set of qubits, checked with coordinated measurements that screen out errors, and then grown across more qubits for protection. The experiment used 54 of Willow's 105 physical qubits.
The team, building on a 2024 proposal by Google researchers Craig Gidney, Noah Shutty and Cody Jones, also showed that purified states can be transferred between two types of error correction, grafting a state from a distance-3 color code onto a distance-5 surface code without losing its integrity.
What it does not solve yet
Google is not claiming the finish line. The quality-control step discards the large majority of attempts, and cultivation still has to be demonstrated at a much larger scale before it is realistic for practical machines.
But this is the first time the technique has been shown working on real hardware rather than in theory, and it lands on the same Willow platform that carried Google's earlier error-correction milestones.

Options market and stocks to watch
Quantum headlines move a small, volatile corner of the market, and GOOGL is the name with the actual hardware result behind it. Parent Alphabet tends to shrug off quantum news given its size, but a steady drumbeat of Willow milestones keeps the optionality story alive.
The pure plays react far more violently. IONQ and RGTI routinely swing double digits on quantum announcements from bigger rivals, in both directions, as traders reprice who is ahead in the race.
IBM is the other incumbent with a serious quantum program and a steadier options market. Watch unusual call activity across the quantum complex for signs this is being traded as a sector story rather than a Google one, and track the names on the Unusual Whales news feed.
