Man Named Hitler Mussolini Elected Mayor in Peru

Hitler Mussolini wins mayoral race in Peru by 25 votes

Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, 45, has been elected mayor of Queropalca, a remote Andean district in Peru's Huanuco region, winning 229 votes, or 34.5% of the 663 valid ballots cast. He beat his closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of the right-wing Popular Renewal party, by just 25 votes.

Flores ran on the centre-left Ahora Nacion ticket, a year after resigning from the right-wing Popular Force party of President Keiko Fujimori. His campaign focused on agricultural development and road infrastructure for the district of just over 730 people, about 360km north of Lima. He also manages the Simeon Sac investment group in nearby Pillco Marca.

He is not the first Hitler to win office in Peru. Hitler Alba served as mayor of the Andean town of Yungar from 2011 to 2014, and in 2018 beat a rival named Lennin Vladimir Rodriguez Valverde after calling himself "the good Hitler." Peru's La Republica estimates about 2,349 Peruvians share the Nazi leader's first name.

What it means for the options market

Nothing directly: a 730-person district's mayoral race does not move markets. It is a reminder that local politics everywhere can produce global headlines.
