Ilhan Omar's Staff Got Her Birthdate Changed After She Was Elected to Congress, Records Show

A one-year change, made months into her first term

Rep. Ilhan Omar's congressional staff had her birth year changed from 1981 to 1982 in the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library in May 2019, months after she took her seat in Congress, according to emails reviewed by the New York Post. Omar's birthdate had been listed as October 4, 1981 in the library, on Wikipedia and in outlets such as the BBC for the entire time she served in the Minnesota state House and for several months into her congressional term.

"On May 17, 2019, Library staff were informed by Rep. Omar's congressional staff that her birth year was incorrect and requested that we change it to 1982," the library's director wrote in an email days after the change, adding that Omar's staff were also working with Wikipedia and the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress to correct the year on those sites. The director also noted the original 1981 entry had been added from widely available reference sources "without documentation." The change came days after a video from a political opponent questioning Omar's age went viral.

The one-year shift matters because of how Omar says she became a citizen. She has said she gained citizenship through her father's naturalization in 2000, before she turned 18, telling The Intercept in 2018: "I became a citizen actually before I turned 18. My father became a citizen and so I got my citizenship through that process." Critics contend that if she had been born in 1981, she would already have been an adult in 2000 and could not have derived citizenship that way; the Post reported the alteration could be a clue to what federal immigration agents were looking for when they searched her Washington home on Monday.

Omar has denied any immigration wrongdoing and called the search an attempt to target political enemies, writing Monday that it was "an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement." For its part, the biography change on its own does not establish that any immigration record was falsified, and no reporting has established that the birthdate discrepancy prompted the search.

How this could hit the options market

There is no clean single-name trade on a congressional ethics and immigration fight, but headline risk of this kind tends to show up first in broad index flow rather than in any one stock. Watch SPY and QQQ for short-dated put hedging if the story widens into a broader administration-versus-Congress confrontation, and expect volatility to stay event-driven and headline-by-headline rather than directional.
