Russian Oligarch Umar Kremlev Bankrolled Don Jr.'s Bahamas Wedding: ProPublica

ProPublica has dropped a report alleging that Russian oligarch and Putin ally Umar Kremlev quietly bankrolled a significant chunk of Donald Trump Jr.’s May wedding in the Bahamas, with payments routed through a Dubai-based entity tied to the International Boxing Association.

What ProPublica reported

The outlet described Kremlev as a secret benefactor and said he footed the bill for hundreds of thousands of dollars of wedding expenses, according to records reviewed by ProPublica and interviews with three people familiar with the event.

The oligarch paid to rent out one of the private islands, where a reception was held and where guests slept, and also covered other big-ticket items like the fireworks show, with his team helping plan the event. The tab included roughly $100,000 to rent the island and about $70,000 for the fireworks display on the first day of the three-day event.

How the money moved

The payments were made through IB Challenger, a Dubai-based entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, the scandal-plagued boxing organization Kremlev leads. The funds were routed through IB Challenger after being moved from Switzerland following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The IBA has been financed by the Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom.

Who is Kremlev

Kremlev is under Ukrainian sanctions due to his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin through Alexei Rubezhny, head of the Kremlin leader’s personal security service. In 2023, Putin nationalized Russia’s largest car dealership company and Kremlev promptly became its owner, and he is also involved in a sports education organization called Healthy Fatherland, which has been sanctioned by Ukraine for allegedly abducting and relocating Ukrainian children.

The Trump camp response

A spokesperson for Trump Jr. did not dispute that Kremlev paid for the wedding events, telling ProPublica that he was a personal friend, not a business associate.

Bettina Trump said, “Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” calling it an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend that they remain grateful for.
