LinkedIn begins layoffs months after it said it wouldn't be letting go of staff

Per CNBC TV18

LinkedIn once said it wasn't planning to let go of staff but rather freezing its hiring. Still, the company has recently laid off employees within its recruitment recruiting department, as the layoffs reportedly started on Feb 13.

The Information reported that LinkedIn started letting go of employees within its recruitment recruiting department as part of the broader plans of Microsoft. This comes despite previously giving a statement to CNBC TV18 on Nov 2022 regarding how they didn't plan any layoffs.

LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky's statement shared how they were focusing on freezing hiring, but they have not yet announced any layoffs. The CEO shared how they are still navigating the global strategy needed for the platform to continue.

Roslansky: “We haven't announced ... any kind of layoffs. We have put ourselves inside of a hiring freeze right now for various parts of the company."

Melanie Quandt, a LinkedIn user who was previously the Talent Acquisition Engineer senior manager at the company, shared how she was laid off. She noted that this was the first time she had lost her job in 25 years.

Quandt: "Never lost a job in my 25 years in my career ... super disappointed with the small benefits and severance offered. Feeling awful for all of us that were impacted. It will take a lot for me to trust an employer again,"

This comes as part of Microsoft's broader plan to lay off 10,000 employees despite initially saying that less than 1,000 staff would lose their jobs in July 2022. While this was happening, the company hosted an exclusive and private Sting concert on Jan 17, 2023, for top executives.

The company is now focusing its efforts on OpenAI's ChatGPT, as it has recently added it to the new Bing. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella gave a statement sharing how they compete with Google head-on.
