Luigi Mangione, Sam Bankman-Feied and Diddy are all in the same Brooklyn jail

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO, is being detained at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, the same facility where music mogul and accused sex trafficker Sean "Diddy" Combs is currently housed.

The Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) is a federal prison in New York known for holding high-profile defendants awaiting trial. Over the years, its inmate roster has included figures such as Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, R. Kelly, and now Mangione and Combs.

Extradition and Charges

Mangione was extradited to New York on Thursday from Pennsylvania, where he had been arrested on gun charges. He now faces state charges of first- and second-degree murder, as well as federal charges including stalking, murder using a firearm, and illegal possession of a gun. The federal charges make Mangione eligible for the death penalty and justify his placement in the MDC.

MDC's Troubled Reputation

The Metropolitan Detention Center has a notorious reputation for chronic understaffing, violence, and subpar living conditions. Federal judges in New York have previously reduced sentences for defendants based on the harsh and dangerous conditions at the facility. One judge described it as "barbaric."

Despite these conditions, Mangione will remain at MDC until his next hearing in mid-January.

The Case and Public Reaction

Mangione’s case has drawn national attention due to the high-profile nature of the crime. Earlier this month, UnitedHealthcare CEO David Thompson was fatally shot multiple times in Midtown Manhattan during the morning rush. The suspect managed to flee the scene in broad daylight, evading police for several days.

Mangione was eventually apprehended at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania after being recognized by a patron. Authorities reportedly found a notebook in his possession containing angry rants against U.S. health insurance companies, expressing a desire for revenge.

While the murder has been widely condemned as a tragic and violent act, it has sparked online discussions about public frustrations with the health insurance industry. A small group of supporters, primarily young people, has emerged, viewing Mangione as a symbol of resistance against predatory healthcare practices. Protesters holding signs advocating for his freedom gathered outside the courthouse during his appearance on Thursday.

Sean Combs and the MDC

Sean "Diddy" Combs, also held at MDC, was arrested in September on federal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. Prosecutors allege that Combs and his associates used threats, coercion, and abuse to exploit victims, including forcing them into recorded sexual acts he referred to as "Freak Offs."

Combs has denied the charges, with his legal team asserting his innocence and claiming he has "nothing to hide."
