"McDonald's is using AI to price your Big Mac," per YF
Your Big Mac's price isn't set by your local franchisee. An algorithm is.
McDonald's has deployed an AI pricing engine across its nearly 14,000 US restaurants and select overseas markets, according to a Reuters investigation published September 29. The system uses machine learning to estimate what each store's customers are willing to pay — then generates an "optimal price" for every menu item at each location.
The 21% Big Mac gap
In Fresno, California, one company-run McDonald's sells a Big Mac for $5.69. Drive two miles to another company-run store and the same sandwich rings up at $6.89 — a 21% premium.
Reuters saw screenshots of the pricing portal labeling locations with messages like "Your restaurant is showing MEDIUM SENSITIVITY to Price," based on "customer willingness to pay in your area."
Franchisees feel the pressure
McDonald's says the tool is "a tool, not a mandate" and called the reporting "speculative and uninformed." But five franchisees told Reuters they felt pressured to adopt the AI recommendations — and in January, McDonald's began requiring franchisees to be "constructively engaging with McDonald's approved Pricing Consultant and Tools."
The system has been evolving since 2019, when the company first used AI-informed pricing, and it's operated with help from Tiger Analytics.
The friction
Operating costs are up 36% since 2019, and US foot traffic has declined year-over-year every month since March, per Placer.ai. Franchisees want to raise prices; the pricing engine has shifted toward more conservative recommendations. That tension is the real story.

What this means for the options market
Algorithmic pricing is margin defense — and margins are the whole fast-food story right now. If McDonald's AI squeezes more profit per customer while foot traffic slides, the trade is about who wins the value war: McDonald's or competitors like Yum Brands, which is also turning to AI for pricing and operations.
