McDonald's drops McNuggets made with zero meat: just peas, wheat, and tempura batter
Per USA Today
McDonald's has co-developed plant-based McPlant nuggets with Beyond Meat as it introduces nuggets made of peas, wheat, and tempura batter. This move follows the company's 2021 decision to offer McPlant burgers.
Beyond Meat is an El Segundo, California-based company that focuses on producing plant-based meats. A July 2022 article by CNBC shared how BYND stock fell by 53% during the report after the McPlant burgers showed "lackluster demand," with Goldman writing a statement regarding how the company's stock performs.
Goldman: “Consensus contemplates 21% growth for BYND’s total top line this year, followed by another 25% next year. These rates will not be easy to hit, in our view, without [McDonald’s] in the US,”
McDonald's reportedly concluded its McPlant burger test in the summer of 2022 without a follow-up announcement for future plans. The product that the fast food chain is adding was launched in US groceries in 2021 by Beyond Meat.
The fast food chain will first launch McPlant nuggets in Germany with 1,400 restaurants after a limited period in Stuttgart for nine months. McDonald's said that the launch of the McPlant nuggets depends on customer demand.
In early 2021, McDonald's and Beyond said that they entered a three-year partnership as they started to sell McPlant burgers in other international markets. Aside from the US, plant-based nuggets were also launched in Sweden, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands, and the UK.
McDonald's also said back in June of last year that its McPlant burgers sold well in Austria and the UK markets.
Toward the end of 2022, McDonald's launched its first ever fully automated fast food restaurant in Texas. The company says these restaurants are designed to cater to customers who want to dine at home or are on the go.
Recently, McDonald's president, who made $7.4 million in 2022, said paying a $22/hr rate would be "costly and job-destroying."
