Mexico to place retaliatory tariffs against the United States

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Saturday that she has directed her economy minister to enforce tariff and non-tariff measures in response to the sweeping U.S. duties imposed on Mexican goods.

Mexico’s Stance

In a detailed post on X, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration is not seeking conflict with the United States but rather prioritizing collaboration and dialogue.

The leftist president, who has consistently worked to ease tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighted her government’s efforts since taking office in October—including the seizure of 20 million doses of the synthetic opioid fentanyl and the arrest of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

Trump’s Justification

Trump has justified the tariffs by citing what he calls Mexico’s failure to curb fentanyl trafficking into the U.S., as well as what he describes as rampant illegal migration.
