Microsoft Offers Buyouts to Around 60,000 Employees in Latest AI-Era Cost Cut

Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to around 60,000 employees, according to reports from Business Insider and Bloomberg.

The company confirmed the program on Monday, marking its latest effort to cut costs and rework its workforce for the AI era.

Who Is Eligible

The offer covers roughly 60,000 of Microsoft's approximately 223,000 employees, or about 27% of its total workforce.

Employees at the vice president level and below on select teams in the U.S., Canada, India, and the U.K. will be eligible, the reports say.

Per Bloomberg, divisions including Xbox, Windows, Copilot, and Finance are participating in the offer.

Some employees, including those working in data centers, sales, and marketing, are excluded.

The "Voluntary Exit Offer"

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the program, called a Voluntary Exit Offer, in a note to employees that Microsoft also published on its website.

"The Voluntary Exit Offer reflects an important part of how we're evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter," Coleman wrote.

"This offer gives eligible employees who may be considering a future outside the company a new choice to make that transition now with support," she added.

Eligible employees were set to receive an email with their individual offer details on Monday.

The terms will be similar to Microsoft's standard severance, and reports say employees have until early December to decide and would leave at the end of the year.

The Latest in a Series of Cuts

The buyout follows an April voluntary retirement program offered to roughly 9,000 U.S. employees, about a third of whom accepted.

Microsoft also laid off about 4,800 people a few months ago, with cuts concentrated in Xbox and commercial sales.

The company has not disclosed the cost of the new program or how many employees it expects to accept.

What It Means for Markets

Shares of MSFT were up about 1.1% at $530.20 in midday trading on Monday, as investors initially read the program as margin-friendly.

Cost discipline has been the market's preferred narrative for mega-cap tech this year, with headcount reductions funding enormous AI data center spending.

The timing matters: Microsoft reports fiscal first-quarter results after the market closes on Wednesday, and management commentary on AI spending versus operating leverage will be the real catalyst.

Options traders should watch for elevated volume in MSFT into earnings, along with read-through flow in other AI-exposed names making similar workforce moves, including GOOGL and AMZN.

If buyout uptake is high, severance charges could weigh on a future quarter, a risk worth monitoring in the options market's pricing of longer-dated puts.
