MongoDB CEO CJ Desai Exits for Meta’s New Enterprise Unit; MDB Craters
MongoDB CEO CJ Desai resigned effective immediately to lead Meta’s new Enterprise Platform unit under Zuckerberg. MDB shares plunged as much as 23% on the news.
MongoDB just lost its chief executive to Meta, and the tape reacted immediately. Shares of MongoDB ($MDB) plunged about 23% Monday after CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai stepped down effective immediately to join Meta Platforms ($META) as chief enterprise platform officer.
The move
Desai will report directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and lead the social media giant's new Meta Enterprise Platform for businesses, less than a year into his role at MongoDB.
The new platform will initially prioritize a suite of tools that includes Meta’s new Muse agent, business agent and a coding tool. In Zuckerberg’s words, Meta plans to use “strengths that few other companies have: advanced models, leading agents, large-scale infrastructure, and years of working closely with many businesses.”
Why MDB is getting hit
Desai was hired less than a year ago as a next-generation leader for the database company. He had been in the CEO role for less than a year, having taken over from Ittycheria in November 2025.
Losing a fresh CEO to a competitor building an enterprise AI stack is a double negative: leadership vacuum plus a signal that Meta is now aiming directly at MongoDB’s customer base.

Interim leadership and guidance
MongoDB appointed former CEO Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO and reaffirmed its third-quarter and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance. Ittycheria led MongoDB for 11 years, from 2014 to 2025, during which the company grew from roughly $35 million to more than $2.3 billion in annual revenue.
MongoDB’s Investor Day remains scheduled for September 29, with management set to discuss long-term strategy, market opportunities and AI-related product development. That event now becomes the next major catalyst for the stock.
What Meta gets
Zuckerberg cited Desai’s previous experience at Cloudflare and ServiceNow, describing him as a leader with a “track record of building full-stack software and delivering results in AI” who could help businesses “grow and transform in new ways.”
The hire underscores Meta’s push to monetize its AI stack beyond consumer apps. Desai’s transition comes as Meta undergoes a pivot, betting big on new artificial intelligence products and services for its enterprise customers, while investors have demanded a payoff from the company’s hefty AI investments on new infrastructure and tools.
