Elon Musk Cements Record as Largest Individual Political Donor in Modern US History With $446 Million Midterm Haul, per Washington Post

Elon Musk has cemented his record as the largest individual political donor in modern American history, per the Washington Post.

The Tesla and SpaceX chief executive poured $446 million of his own money into this year's midterm elections, according to a Washington Post analysis of Federal Election Commission filings published October 23.

Most of the money is aimed at preserving the Republican Party's control of Congress in the November 3 elections.

Where the Money Went

The largest share flowed to America PAC, the super PAC Musk founded in 2024, which took in about $216 million.

Musk gave the group $76.8 million in October alone. The committee focuses on paid canvassing and voter turnout, and it spent nearly $43 million in the first two weeks of the month.

Musk also directed about $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates, and about $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, per the Post.

A large portion of the Senate money landed in Texas, where Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched Senate race.

A Record That Was Not Close

Musk's $446 million total is roughly three times the giving of the next-largest individual donors this cycle, per the Post's analysis.

It also dwarfs the prior benchmark. Sheldon and Miriam Adelson gave roughly $218 million in 2020, previously the high-water mark for an individual or couple funding other candidates and groups.

Musk is one of only four individual donors this cycle to clear $100 million, and three of the four are primarily backing Republican causes.

The Post found the 50 biggest donors and donor organizations contributed about $2.77 billion to influence congressional races this cycle. Republican-aligned donors accounted for roughly $1.7 billion of that, against $832 million from Democratic-aligned sources.

A Return to the Fold

The spending marks a sharp recommitment to Republican politics after Musk's public feud with President Donald Trump last year.

Musk spent roughly $288 million backing Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 cycle, then led the Department of Government Efficiency in the early Trump administration before the relationship ruptured.

The 2026 haul suggests the rift has been set aside, at least financially, with Musk again the GOP's single largest outside benefactor.

What It Means for Markets

Election outcomes drive tax, energy, and regulatory policy, and traders are watching control of Congress closely into November 3.

Tesla is the most direct Musk-linked trade. TSLA options flow often spikes around Musk headlines, and a Republican Congress is broadly seen as friendlier to the deregulation and industrial policy his companies benefit from.

Beyond Tesla, index volatility is worth watching into election week. SPY hedging demand typically rises when control of Congress is in doubt, and a $2.77 billion donor cycle underscores how much money is riding on the result.

Defense and energy names tied to Republican policy priorities, including XLE components, also tend to see elevated flow when GOP odds improve in prediction markets and polling.

The Bottom Line

One man wrote $446 million of the checks in a $2.77 billion donor cycle.

Whether that money holds Congress for Republicans will be decided November 3, but Musk's place in the record books is already settled.
