Musk Floats a Competitor to Amazon After Grok Bots Are Blocked From Ordering

Musk pokes Amazon where it lives

Elon Musk has mused about taking on Amazon in its home market. "Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon," Musk wrote on X on Thursday, replying to a user who had suggested an "X Shop" as an alternative marketplace.

The post carried no plan, name, or timeline, and Musk has not confirmed that any such service is in development. It did cap a day of friction between Musk's AI shopping tools and the largest online retailer in the United States.

Amazon is blocking the bots

The exchange began after X users reported that Amazon had begun blocking Grok Bot agents from placing orders on its site. One user posted a screenshot of an Amazon warning that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use. Amazon has not independently confirmed the Grok restriction.

Musk first told users to route around the block, writing that they should just ask Grok to buy what they want someplace else and get a better deal, and that there are far more purchasing websites than just Amazon.

Grok Bot is the autonomous agent built into xAI's Grok, released in early beta in August and available through select Grok subscription plans such as SuperGrok Heavy. Hours earlier, Musk had vouched for the bot's shopping skills after a user described booking a flight through it, writing that if Grok ever makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks a card, SpaceX will make the user whole.

Agents are the new storefront fight

Amazon has moved against outside shopping agents before. In September, the company blocked Meta's Muse Spark agent from making purchases on its platform, raising concerns about identification, terms of use, and account access, per reporting at the time, and it has been building AI shopping tools of its own.

Amazon accounts for roughly a third of US e-commerce, so whoever controls the AI agents that shop for consumers controls the customer. That is the fight Musk's one line post wandered into, and it is one retailers show no sign of giving up quietly.

Options market and stocks to watch

AMZN is the name in the middle of this. Musk comments rarely move it for long, but a real Musk backed marketplace effort would target the agent layer Amazon is actively defending, so watch AMZN options flow for headline sensitivity whenever the story develops.

The routing around scenario has its own beneficiaries. WMT and SHOP are the alternative checkouts AI agents can send shoppers to, and agent driven traffic is a new variable in both stories. TSLA, as always, carries Musk headline risk in both directions.
