New Chinese supercar from BYD, BYD, can jump 6 meters over a pothole

The Chinese automaker BYD, known for its affordable electric vehicles, showcased the impressive capabilities of its high-end supercar, the $233,400 Yangwang U9, in a new video demonstrating its ability to "jump" over obstacles.

In a video released Monday on BYD's Weibo account, the autonomously driven Yangwang U9 accelerates to 120 km/h before using its advanced suspension system to leap up to six meters forward, clearing a pothole, road spikes, and a chalk flag.

While BYD has gained global recognition for budget-friendly EVs like the $10,000 Seagull, the company is now expanding into the luxury market. The U9, introduced in February 2024, boasts a top speed of 192 mph and accelerates from 0 to 62 km/h in just 2.36 seconds. It also features rapid charging, with the ability to go from 30% to 80% battery in just 10 minutes.

Packed with cutting-edge technology, the U9’s DiSus-X intelligent suspension system allows it to perform feats such as leaping over small obstacles, "dancing" to music, and driving with only three wheels, as demonstrated during its launch last year.

The Yangwang brand represents BYD's foray into the luxury segment. In addition to the U9, BYD introduced the Yangwang U8 hybrid SUV in April 2023, which features unique capabilities like an onboard drone and the ability to float on water for short durations.

While BYD's high-end offerings generate buzz, the automaker's affordable EVs and hybrids have solidified its position as a formidable competitor to Tesla. Earlier this month, BYD reported record annual sales and announced its expansion into new markets. On Tuesday, the company revealed that nearly 5,000 of its electric vehicles were being shipped to Europe aboard its third purpose-built container vessel.
