New US tariffs on imported kitchen cabinets, vanities, lumber, timber and certain upholstered furniture have come into effect
New U.S. tariffs on a range of imported home products — including kitchen cabinets, vanities, lumber, timber, and certain types of upholstered furniture — have officially taken effect.
Under a proclamation signed by President Donald Trump last month, a 10% tariff now applies to softwood lumber and timber imports beginning Tuesday. Imported kitchen cabinets and vanities face a 25% tariff, set to rise to 50% on January 1, while the 25% tariff on upholstered wooden furniture will climb to 30% unless new trade agreements are reached.
The administration says the tariffs are necessary to protect U.S. manufacturing and national security interests. However, industry groups warn the new duties could push up housing and renovation costs for American consumers. Tariffs — essentially taxes on imported goods — are paid by companies importing products, which often pass the costs on to customers, meaning higher prices for U.S. households and businesses.
The measures expand on Trump’s earlier trade policies, which have already targeted sectors like steel, aluminum, cars, and copper. The additional 10% global tariff on softwood lumber means imports from Canada, a major supplier to the U.S., now face total duties exceeding 45%, including long-standing countervailing and anti-dumping charges. Duties on wood products from the U.K. are capped at 10%, and those from the EU and Japan at 15%, under existing trade agreements.
The White House said the new tariffs are meant to “protect against threats” to U.S. national security and “strengthen domestic manufacturing.” But the National Association of Home Builders cautioned that the policy could further strain an already fragile housing market by increasing construction and renovation costs. Cristina Fernández of Telsey Advisory Group told CBS News that retailers would likely need to raise prices, saying, “They can’t absorb 30% tariffs on top of the ones already in place.”
