Newsom Says He ‘Didn’t Even Know’ About 5,000-Bottle Wine Cellar at $7.5M Home
Gavin Newsom says he was unaware of the 5,000-bottle wine cellar at his $7.5M Sacramento-area mansion, now listed for sale as he preps an expected 2028 White House run.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he had no idea his $7.5 million Sacramento-area mansion contained a 5,000-bottle wine cellar. The claim landed as he and his wife list the property for sale ahead of an expected 2028 presidential run.
What Newsom actually said
At a press conference, Newsom was asked about the listing of his Sacramento property, specifically whether he filled that cellar. The governor, who has long-standing ties to the wine industry, responded that he was unaware of the cellar’s size.
The governor claims he did not know the cellar had that much capacity until news reports informed him. Photos of the room reportedly show books stacked among the wine bottles.
The property
Newsom listed his 8.2-acre Sacramento-area mansion for $7.5 million. Nearly 12,700 square feet, seven bedrooms, a pool, tennis court, hot tub, cold plunge, guesthouse.
Outside of Sacramento, the couple purchased a $9 million home in Marin County in 2024. The Sacramento listing comes as Newsom winds down his time in the state capitol.

Why the wine angle matters
Much of the family’s income comes from Newsom’s stakes in a lucrative wine and hospitality business he founded off the back of his connections to one of California’s wealthiest families, the Getty oil clan. That backdrop is why the ‘didn’t know’ line is drawing skepticism.
PlumpJack, the hospitality group Newsom co-founded, spans wineries, restaurants and hotels. It remains a meaningful piece of the family balance sheet even as he prepares a national campaign.
The 2028 backdrop
Newsom is winding down his time in the California capitol as he preps an expected White House run. Optics around wealth, real estate, and lifestyle tend to matter more once a primary campaign starts.
Traders tracking political risk should note the timing. A Newsom candidacy would put California policy on tax, energy, and tech regulation back into the national conversation.
