Hegseth Says Fort Hood Shooter's Firing Squad Execution Will Be Made Public
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Nidal Hasan's Dec. 3 firing squad execution at Fort Hood will be "made public so people can watch it."
A public execution
The execution of Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan by firing squad will be "made public so people can watch it," according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The execution is set for December 3 at 2 p.m. ET at Fort Hood, the same base where Hasan carried out the massacre in 2009. President Trump approved the firing squad method on Hegseth's recommendation.
It would be the first U.S. military execution by firing squad since 1945.
The crime and the sentence
Hasan, a former Army major and psychiatrist, opened fire inside a crowded soldier processing center on November 5, 2009. He killed 13 people, including 12 soldiers and one civilian, and wounded more than 30 others.
A military jury convicted him in August 2013 and unanimously recommended the death sentence. He has been held on military death row since.
Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle set the date and location after Trump's approval cleared the final procedural hurdle.
Why it matters now
The case has drawn renewed attention as the administration pushes an aggressive posture on military justice. Hegseth marked the news with a one-word social media post: "Justice."
Hasan's remaining legal appeals could still delay the execution. His lawyers may challenge the sentence in civilian federal court, a process that has stalled military executions for decades.

Options market and stocks to watch
This story carries little direct market impact, but it sits inside a broader defense-posture narrative that keeps attention on military spending. Defense primes tend to see steady institutional interest when Pentagon headlines dominate the cycle.
Watch LMT, RTX and NOC for any sympathy flow tied to defense-policy news. Media names could also see a short-term attention bump around December 3 if the execution proceeds as announced.
For the most part, this is a headline to read rather than trade. Keep an eye on the Unusual Whales news feed for anything that changes that.
