Nikki Haley suspended presidential campaign against Donald Trump
Nikki Haley to suspend presidential campaign against Donald Trump.
"I am grateful for the overwhelming support we've received from across our nation," Haley stated in a brief address delivered in her home state. "However, the time has come to suspend my campaign."
"I have sought to give Americans a voice, and I believe I have done so," she continued. "I have no regrets. Though I will no longer be running for office, I will continue to use my voice to advocate for the principles I hold dear."
Following significant losses on Super Tuesday, Haley's decision leaves Trump as the sole major candidate for the 2024 Republican nomination.
Haley acknowledged in her remarks that Trump, whom she has criticized in the past, is now all but certain to be the GOP nominee after the party's convention in July.
"I congratulate him and wish him well. I wish anyone well who seeks to be president of our country," she said. "Our nation is too important to let our differences divide us."
However, she did not explicitly endorse Trump, stating: "I have always been a conservative Republican and have always supported the Republican nominee. But on this issue, as on many others, Margaret Thatcher provided wise counsel when she said, 'Never just follow the crowd. Always make up your own mind.'"
"It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those within our party and beyond who did not support him," she added. "And I hope he does so. Politics, at its core, is about rallying people to your cause, not pushing them away. Our conservative values greatly benefit from a broader base of support."
Closing her campaign, Haley recalled her launch last February and quoted from the Book of Joshua: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
