Nvidia CDS Hits Record High as $750B AI Deal Talks Spook Credit Market

Nvidia's five-year CDS spiked to a record 82 basis points after reports of more than $750B in AI infrastructure deal talks raised circular financing concerns.

Nvidia CDS Hits Record High as $750B AI Deal Talks Spook Credit Market

The cost of insuring Nvidia debt against default has hit an all-time high, and the credit market is sending a signal the equity market cannot ignore.

What happened

The cost of protecting Nvidia Corp.’s debt against default surged by the most on record Monday, after reports of the chipmaker being in conversations on more than $750 billion of artificial intelligence infrastructure deals stoked fears about the company’s obligations.

The price of protecting its debt against default for five years rose as much as 0.14 percentage point to 0.82 percentage point a year, according to ICE Data Services. That’s the biggest intraday rise since the swaps started to actively trade in November.

Why the credit market flinched

The sharp move followed Bloomberg reports that NVIDIA is negotiating artificial intelligence infrastructure arrangements potentially exceeding $750 billion in value. The reported structures include a $250 billion financing guarantee intended to support OpenAI’s leasing of capacity at a planned data center in Ohio, as well as a separate commitment to help fund $350 billion of OpenAI chip purchases.

The spike followed reports that Nvidia is negotiating a $250 billion backstop for OpenAI to finance a planned data center, alongside a $500 billion-plus partnership with South Korean conglomerate SK Group announced on July 24. According to Bloomberg, the SK Group deal involves commitments on both Nvidia’s purchases of memory chips and SK Group’s purchases of Nvidia’s products.

Context on the move

Nvidia’s CDS climbed from approximately 42 basis points in late June to 57 basis points by mid-July, then surged 14 basis points in a single day to the record level. That is a fast repricing for one of the least-levered megacaps in tech.

Nvidia’s balance sheet remains strong: the company carried approximately $8.5 billion in total debt against $10.6 billion in cash in fiscal year 2026. Yet the CDS market is pricing in elevated risk, particularly given the scale of commitments being made.

When Oracle’s credit default swap spreads spiked in early 2026 amid similar AI capex concerns, the company announced a $50 billion debt and equity financing plan, and its CDS subsequently fell. Nvidia has not announced comparable financing relief.

Equity market reaction

Nvidia shares fell 4.99% on Monday to close at $196.51, stripping roughly $250 billion from the chipmaker’s market value and ceding the title of world’s most valuable company to Apple, which rose more than 1% to a market cap of roughly $4.95 trillion on the day.

The concern circulating on desks is straightforward: vendor financing and backstops mean Nvidia is increasingly underwriting the customers who buy its chips, which the credit market is starting to treat as a liability rather than a growth story.

Options market and stocks to watch

NVDA: Watch for elevated skew and put demand while CDS spreads remain wide. Any announcement of a financing package similar to Oracle’s could tighten spreads and squeeze downside hedges.

ORCL: A comparison trade given Oracle went through the same CDS spike earlier this year. Watch for spillover in AI infrastructure names.

AAPL: Reclaimed the most-valuable-company title on the Nvidia weakness. Watch for continued rotation flows if AI capex worries persist.

SMH: The semiconductor ETF is the cleanest way to track sector contagion from the circular financing narrative.

MSFT: OpenAI’s largest backer. Watch for any read-through as the market digests who ultimately bears the financing risk of these AI buildouts.
