Obama: Global Living Standards Would Improve if Women Ran Every Government for Two Years
Barack Obama said global living standards and outcomes would improve if women ran every government for two years, reviving a 2019 argument during a Salem State University discussion.
Former President Barack Obama said global living standards and outcomes would improve if women were put in charge of every government for a two-year stretch, reviving an argument he first floated years ago. The comments, per Yahoo Finance, are drawing fresh attention across political and market commentary circles.
What Obama actually said
Obama said things would be ‘better’ if women were put in charge of governments for two years during a 21 September discussion with Doris Kearns Goodwin, where he also addressed political divisions and the state of American democracy.
He told a college audience that he believed putting women in charge of governments could improve living standards and other outcomes although he acknowledged they would not be perfect. The former US president made the remarks during a wide-ranging conversation at Salem State University in Massachusetts on Monday, 21 September. The sold-out event drew 3,600 people to the university’s O’Keefe Sports Complex, with hundreds more watching from a satellite venue on campus.
Not a new argument
At a leadership event in Singapore in December 2019, Obama argued that living standards and other outcomes would improve if women ran every country for two years, and he criticised older leaders who were reluctant to make way for a younger generation.
The clip gained traction after C-SPAN posted it on September 24, drawing criticism from conservative commentators.

Broader political backdrop
Obama told the Salem audience that American society was not as divided at the community level as national politics and media coverage sometimes suggested. ‘We aren’t as divided as we seem at the ground level,’ he said.
He also said that progress on women’s rights, civil rights and LGBTQ rights had not been reversed and that, in most places, the ‘vast majority’ of people continued to support those advances.
The research he has cited before
Obama has previously pointed to academic work suggesting a link between female leadership and stronger economic outcomes in diverse nations. Research shows, ‘Among the most diverse countries, those led by women had an average of 5.4% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the subsequent year, as compared to those led by men, which had an average of 1.1% GDP growth, according to Perkins and Phillips.’
