Doug Ford Cancels Ontario’s $100M Starlink Contract Over U.S. Tariffs

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford announced on Monday that Ontario is canceling its nearly $100 million contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink, citing the Trump administration’s sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods.

Contract Scrapped Over Tariffs

The November agreement was set to bring high-speed satellite internet to 15,000 rural, remote, and northern homes and businesses by June. However, Ford said the deal would no longer stand in light of Trump’s new trade measures.

“Musk is part of the Trump team that wants to destroy families, incomes, destroy businesses,” Ford declared at a news conference in Etobicoke.

“He wants to take food off the table of hardworking people, and I’m not going to tolerate it.”

Musk Shrugs Off Ford’s Move

Musk, who owns X (formerly Twitter), responded to the announcement with a brief post:

“Oh well,” he wrote.

Ontario Bans U.S. Companies from Contracts

Ford further announced that American companies will be banned from bidding on Ontario government contracts until the U.S. tariffs are lifted.

“U.S.-based businesses will now lose out on tens of billions of dollars in new revenues. They only have President Trump to blame,” Ford stated.

Trump’s Tariffs and Musk’s Role in His Administration

On Saturday, President Donald Trump imposed:

• 25% tariffs on nearly all Canadian goods
• 10% tariffs on Canadian energy exports

Musk, a close adviser to Trump, is also leading the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in cooperation with the president’s administration.
