OpenAI's Annualized Revenue Nears $50 Billion, $20B Below Earlier Reports, per FT

OpenAI told investors annualized revenue neared $50B at end-September, about $20B below the $70B figure reported in late September, per the FT.

A $20 billion gap

OpenAI's annualized revenue is actually approaching $50 billion, roughly $20 billion less than the $70 billion figure widely reported by media outlets in late September 2026, according to the Financial Times.

The company gave investors the lower number in recent briefings covering performance through end-September. The gap rattled markets: the Nasdaq Composite fell 337 points to 27,201 on the news.

Why the numbers differ

Part of the gap is accounting. Rival Anthropic counts cloud-partner sales in its revenue figures, while OpenAI does not, making direct comparisons misleading.

The context is still staggering either way. OpenAI raised $122 billion in March, and leaked 2025 financials showed about $13 billion in revenue against far higher spending. Even at $50 billion annualized, the growth rate is historic.

Oracle takes the hit

Oracle shares slid 4.9% to $136.50 on the news, the hardest hit among the AI infrastructure names. Microsoft fell 1.2% to $523.29, AMD dropped 3.3% to $624.65 and Broadcom slid 3.2% to $364.58.

Oracle's cloud business is deeply tied to AI infrastructure spending, so any doubt about AI demand lands there first. The stock has become a proxy for how Wall Street feels about the AI buildout on any given day.

Options market and stocks to watch

ORCL is the epicenter: a 4.9% drop on a revenue whisper miss shows how tightly its valuation is wound to AI sentiment. Expect heavy put volume and elevated implied volatility into the next OpenAI headline.

The AI hardware trade felt it too. NVDA, AMD and AVGO all sold off as traders repriced AI demand expectations. Call skew in these names will tell you whether the dip is being bought.

MSFT, OpenAI's key backer, held up better but remains the long-term AI proxy. Any further downside surprises from OpenAI's numbers flow straight through to Microsoft's AI narrative. Track AI market action on the Unusual Whales news feed.
